Has anyone else heard of this new movie that's come out recently? It's a unique take on the "Wizard of Oz" story (a prequel, in fact) with a magician named Oscar Diggs being hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz. At first he thinks he's hit the jackpot-fame and fortune are his for the taking. That all changes, when he meets three witches who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone's been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity-and even a bit of wizardry-Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.
I recently got a chance to see a screening of it, and I thought it was very well done. What I liked a lot about this film is how not only it does a nod to the 1939 MGM musical "The Wizard of Oz" by borrowing certain elements (such as starting off in black and white and then gradually becoming color, and also having character counterparts between Kansas and Oz), but it's also very clever and very creative in setting up the things a lot of us know about in the original "Wizard of Oz" story. The visuals are very impressive, there were moments that were funny and thrilling, the grand scope and colors of the land of Oz were amazing to see, it's certainly an inviting film. This, to me, is what Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" should have been; not having to rely on fantastic visuals to outweigh a poorly-told story. This film is definitely worth seeing.
