The Fox and the Hound is a 1981 American animated feature loosely based on the Daniel P. Mannix novel of the same name, produced by Walt Disney Productions and released in the United States on July 10, 1981. The 24th film in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series. The film tells the story of two unlikely friends, a red fox named Tod and a hound dog named Copper, who struggle to preserve their friendship despite their emerging instincts and the surrounding social pressures demanding them to be adversaries. In the film, the film's protagonists, Tod and Copper, meet when young and become friends. They play together all summer long, however, as they grow up, they become enemies because real hounds hunt foxes for food.

Though not an absolute favorite of mine, it certainly has left an impression on me, especially since it's one of those rare Disney movies that doesn't exactly have a happy ending. It does, however, have some endearing moments, especially when it comes to the relationship between Tod and Copper.
I also liked how good the musical score sounded at some points, like it almost deserved an Academy Award nomination.

I know the 80s were mostly a dark time for Disney back then, but I've notice other than Oliver and Company and The Little Mermaid, this film still remains special in our hearts through out our childhood. It teaches us a good lesson that even though you're different, you can still find friendship in just about anyone.

I think what makes this movie an underrated gem is the fact. People can relate to the characters of Tod and Copper. They become best friends as children and when they get older kind of drift apart and hate each other. Sometimes that really does happen in friendships.
